A few thoughts about circuses....
The circus was a product of its time. Before electricity, mass entertainment was limited to sporting events, concerts, and circuses. As much fun as a circus appeared to be, once audiences had widespread access to movies, and later television, the end was inevitable.
Nevertheless, despite its pretense of magnificence, as well as the subtext of seediness, there was an undeniable mystique to the circus. Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote what I thought was her greatest novel, The Catch Trap, about circus life before, during, and after WWII. And Cecil B. DeMille made one of most enjoyable movies, The Greatest Show On Earth, about the circus. There have been other noteworthy films as well. Water For Elephants, for example.
But the circus isn't entirely dead. Cirque du Soleil has pretty much replaced the Ringling Bros. I haven't been to any of the Cirques recently. (I do want to see Love, next time I'm in Vegas.) I liked the Cirques when they had clowns, but the last two or three I went to, there were no clowns, and I came away missing them.
Bill Irwin and (I forget the other fellow's name) did a great show called Fool Moon, which played to packed houses in Hollywood in 1994. I took Sean on a Sunday night, even though it was a school night. (The next morning we had an earthquake, so school was cancelled anyway.)
For my money, Bill Irwin is the greatest American clown, but if he's still performing, I'm not aware of it. He's also one hell of a good actor, as he demonstrated on CSI.
But I can't really mourn the disappearance of clowns -- most of them have gone into politics, and the biggest one of all will be dominating the news for quite some time to come.

Hola, Jonio.
